Xuemin Lin is a Full Professor in the School of Data Science at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He received his BSc in Applied Mathematics from Fudan University in 1984, studied for a PhD in Applied Mathematics at Fudan University from 1984 to 1988, and earn a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Queensland in 1992.

He was a Chair Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (June 2022 – Feb. 2026) and the founding Chair of the Department of Data and Business Intelligence at Antai College of Economics & Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (June 2022 – Feb. 2026). Before that, he was a UNSW Scientia Professor (Jan. 2015 – May 2022) and the founding Head of the Database and Knowledge Research Laboratory in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). At UNSW, he served as Professor (2007–2014), Associate Professor (2003–2007), and Senior Lecturer (1998–2003). Earlier, he was a Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science, University of Western Australia (Nov. 1994 – Nov. 1997), after a Research Fellow appointment at the University of Queensland (June 1992 – Nov. 1994). He was also a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, a Visiting Chair Professor at Fudan University, and an Adjunct Professor at East China Normal University, Zhejiang Gongshang University, and Guangzhou University.

He is a Foreign Member of Academia Europaea, a Fellow of IEEE, and a Fellow of AAIA. He served as Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (Jan. 2017 – Dec. 2021), Associate Editor-in-Chief (2015–2016), and Associate Editor (Mar. 2013 – Jan. 2015) of IEEE TKDE, and Associate Editor of ACM Transactions on Database Systems (2008–2014). He was PC co-chair of ICDE 2019 and VLDB 2022, and has regularly served as PC member, area chair, or Senior PC for SIGMOD, VLDB, ICDE, ICDM, KDD, NeurIPS, AAAI, CIKM, and EDBT.

Xuemin's research interests lie in databases, data mining, AI, algorithms, and complexity. Specifically, he is working in the areas of scalable computing, mining and learning of large-scale data, including graph, spatial-temporal, streaming, text and uncertain data. His research highlights include one of the best papers in SIGMOD several times (most recently SIGMOD 2020), Runner-Up of the VLDB 2020 Best Paper Award, Best Paper Award at ICDE 2016, and the Alibaba Innovative Research Award 2019. He has had the highest annual numbers of accepted papers in SIGMOD (CCF A): 7 in 2025; VLDB (CCF A): 12 in 2024; and ICDE (CCF A): 17 in 2022. As of September 24, 2026, his work has over 30,497 citations and an H-index of 87 (Google Scholar).
